Tipu Sultan’s Era Cannon Discovered at Bangalore Metro Site
Workers digging the underground section of the Bangalore Metro rail were surprised to discover a 12 feet 18th century cannon as well as a 10 kg cannonball which is believed to be from the era of Tipu Sultan. The site of construction in Bangalore lies between the summer palace of Tipu Sultan and Bangalore Fort. This is the rarest discovery in the capital of Karnataka linked to that time period. The iron cannon weighs over a ton while the cannonball weighs 10kg. Muzzle is approximately 3/4th the size of cannon. After the discovery, officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) rushed to the site immediately and secured it. The cannon has survived rough weather conditions as well because of being buried in ground for so many years.
Metro Rail workers were directed to dig in the site carefully because there was a possibility of more materials which are archeologically important. ASI has also assured to help Metro in this matter. After the discovery, details such as quantum of gun powder, muzzle molding, length of the fuse point as well as other details will be found out. The discoveries like these are collected as well as placed in museums. The cannon will first be cleaned chemically before being shifted to the museum.

New Drug Discovered that can Halt Cancer from Multiplying
Scientists in the last week of November 2012 developed a new drug called Aflibercept for stopping the cancerous cells from multiplying. The new drug compels the cancerous cells to sleep which in turn stops them in multiplying. The drug is said to trick the tumours for becoming inactive by swapping the molecular switches in cancer structure so that there is no multiplication of the cancerous cells. The drug had shown positive results in UK, where scientists performed trials on the patients. The patients had shown significant life extension. There were over 1400 patients involved in the trial and some of these were also suffering from advanced bowel cancer. These patients with advanced bowel cancer had already gone through chemotherapy which prolonged their life by two years. Scientists believe that the drug would be useful across a wide range of cancers in the future studies. Aflibercept in comparison to the conventional drugs had statistically better survival benefits for treating bowel cancer which had spread even after initial treatment. flibercept is usually given as 30-minute infusion with chemotherapy. As of now, it is found in US only. Europe would soon approve the drug for cancer treatment.

Report Suggested That Developed Nations Deprived Poor Countries of 30 Billion US Dollar Climate Fund
Oxfam Report released in the fourth week of November 2012 ahead of negotiations in Doha, Qatar suggested that the developing nations were deprived of 30 billion US Dollar funds by the rich countries which they had committed to transfer between 2010 and 2012.

Developed nations committed funding for climate change
In 2009 at the Copenhagan talks, developed world had promised to fasttrack funding of 30 billion US dollar between 2010 and 2012 and had also promised annual transfer of 100 billion US Dollar starting from 2020. The money, known as climate funding, was not to be offered as financial assistance or loan, but was a compensation for contribution to climate change. These funds were supposed to be given to the poorest nations so that they could adapt to climate change. These funds should have been new as well as addition to already-existing overseas development aid (ODA) money. The funds were supposed to be used for adaptation as well as flexibility for poor countries according to their own priorities.

What did the Oxfam report find?
It was found that merely 1/3rd of total amount till now is the new money and just 24 percent of this amount was in addition to the existing commitments of aid.

The developed nations spent just 21 percent of this amount on adaptation to the change in climate. Developed nations need to make the solid financial commitments for 2013-2020 time period.

The Doha talks- what to expect?
The Doha talks which will commence on 26 November 2012 will expect developing nations to demand accountability as well as clarity on the promised funds by the developed nations.
The rich countries would find private investments as the solution but the developing countries, on the other hand want public funds as their central source for clean energy as well as adaptation. However, developed countries use ill health of their economy as an excuse to escape the obligations.

What is Oxfam?
Oxfam is the international confederation comprising of 17 organisations which network together in over 90 countries. Oxfam works with the communities directly and functions towards elimination of poverty. The primary aim of Oxfam is to put an end to the injustice and poverty prevailing in various countries.
